This photo shows the mangled thumb of a 23-year-old man who almost lost the digit after having glass shards stuck in it because he played games on his phone with a cracked screen protector.

Three weeks prior to checking himself into a private hospital, 23-year-old Muhammad Azuan Iqbal Abdullah Sani of Shah Alam, western Malaysia, had noticed swelling and some black spots on his right thumb.

A doctor diagnosed him with a bacterial infection and prescribed him antibiotics and painkillers, but the swelling and pain continued to worsen.

It turned out that, in addition to the infection, Sani had glass shards embedded in his thumb and he had to undergo surgery to save the digit. The glass had reportedly become embedded in his thumb as he had been playing games on his mobile phone with a cracked screen protector for four months.

He told local media that if he had he left it any longer, the thumb would have had to be amputated.

A gruesome picture posted by his brother to social media shows the extent of the injury. The post has since garnered over 14,000 retweets and over 5,000 likes.

Sani was discharged from hospital to recover and only had to return to have the wound cleaned, according to local media.

He told local media that he hoped others would replace their cracked screen protectors so they do not end up like him.
