These images show how a lorry carrying a cargo of vans made a petrol station roof collapse at a motorway in France.

The incident took place at the A4 motorway service area of Valmy, about halfway between the French capital Paris and Metz, with the images of the vans wedged under the petrol station roof widely shared on social media.

They show the roof above the petrol pumps bent at an angle with at least two vans wedged under it. The vans are on a lorry trailer and it appears as if they were brand new.

Luckily no one was injured in the incident that resulted in the lorry being completely stuck and with one van even wedged at an angle with two wheels high up in the air.

The incident took place at about 7:30pm on Friday evening and resulted in a long queue of other lorries waiting to fill up on petrol.

The French police told local media that the driver, who has not been named, was not under the effect of any alcohol or drugs, but had simply failed to appreciate the height restriction at the petrol station.

Local firefighters were able to free the lorry and the vans from under the petrol station roof after a few hours.
