Turin’s coronavirus ‘patient number one’ has tested positive for the virus again after previously being given the all-clear.
The 40-year-old from the city of Turin in the northern Italian region of Piedmont has reportedly been in the city’s Amedeo di Savoia Hospital for weeks after becoming the first Italian diagnosed with coronavirus.
The patient, who has not been named, was reportedly about to be sent home after testing negative for the virus.
However, in a control test the patient then again tested positive for COVID-19, meaning they have to remain in the hospital as a precaution.
Professor Giovanni Di Perri, a virologist at the hospital, explained to local media: “He is cured, we confirm it. In these cases, it is quite normal that there is a phase of oscillating between negative and positive.”
Di Perri said the positive test was due to a “residue” of the infection and is not a relapse.
The patient will reportedly remain in hospital as a precaution before undergoing further control tests to be absolutely certain there is no trace of the virus which could be transmitted after they leave.
Local media report experts expect similar situations to occur in more patients who initially test negative before a trace of the virus is found.
