This is the moment a bus driver mounts the pavement and crashes into a pole as screaming passengers are thrown from their seats after the brakes suddenly failed.
The incident took place in the district of Konyaalti in the city of Antalya in the southern Turkish province of the same name.
Bus driver Cengiz Akici, age not disclosed, said he had just picked up passengers from a nearby stop and was gathering speed when he realised the brakes had failed.
Knowing the passengers’ lives were in danger, the driver, with 14 years’ experience, said he first mounted the pavement to try to slow down the bus and not hit other cars on the road.
He then scraped a wall, avoided a tree, and came to a stop when he crashed into a sign post on the pavement.
The incident was filmed by interior and exterior cameras on the bus. In the footage, passengers are seen being thrown from their seats as the composed driver manages to bring the bus to a stop.
At the end of the clip, one passenger asked the driver “are you okay?” and he replies “I’m fine, I’m fine. The brakes just failed”.
According to reports, five people were injured in the incident and were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. No one suffered any life-threatening injuries.
The police have opened a probe into the incident and Akici has been quizzed as part of the ongoing investigation.
