The tragic toddler was found dead in his cot at the family home in Macomb County, Michigan State on 16th March.

An autopsy revealed he had been starved to death, a court hearing heard.

Suspects Jonathon Matthew Cheek, 25, and 27-year-old Sierra Pearl Zaitona, have been charged with second-degree murder and child abuse.

Macomb County Prosecutor’s Office said the child had previously been healthy when it was placed in foster care.

Assistant Prosecutor Molly Zappitell said: “For the record, the child was healthy in foster care, and once it got into the care of these two individuals, it met its demise.”

It is unclear why the toddler was previously in foster care or when he was returned to his biological parents.

Zappitell asked the judge to set a high bond, pointing out that the couple could pose a flight risk.

It was alleged that Zaitona had travelled out of state to give birth so the baby would not be registered with local child protection officials.

Zappitell said: “There is no reason for her to stay. In fact, she had the baby in Ohio to avoid alerting CPS.”

Cheek and Zaitona were held on a USD 1 million bond (GBP 820,000) and will need to wear GBP trackers if released on bail.

The next court date for the murder case is reportedly scheduled for 13th April.
