This is the moment a phone power bank explodes in a man’s pocket at a busy airport and sets fire to his underwear.

He was left standing partially undressed at the end of the footage, but reportedly “quickly found the nearest shop to buy a new pair” of underpants.

The incident took place at the O.R. Tambo International Airport in Kempton Park in the northern South African province of Gauteng, and the footage has been shared on Twitter where it has been viewed 275,000 times.

According to local media, 29-year-old Lwando Mashiamahle was waiting for his girlfriend as she bought plane tickets at the airport when the power bank for his phone exploded in his pocket.

Luckily for the passenger, he was uninjured in the incident although he did lose a pair of underpants.

Airport representatives sent Mashiamahle the CCTV footage of the incident which he forwarded to a friend who posted it online with the caption: “Guys stop buying power banks from Small Street.”

The 29-year-old passenger told local media: “Fortunately I have no injuries but my pants were burnt and I had to quickly find the nearest shop to buy a new pair.”

Reports said that Mashiamahle, who lives in Cape Town, was visiting Gauteng to see his girlfriend and attend a job interview.

He bought the power bank from a hawker on Small Street in the city of Johannesburg.

Mashiamahle told local media: “It felt quite hot in my pocket but I thought it was normal like sometimes your phone heats up when you’re using it, but I never thought it could explode.

“I was so shocked, I didn’t know what to do, I automatically just lost my mind. I was very, very scared.”

Mashiamahle went back to find the street hawker he bought the device from, to complain about the incident but was unable to locate him.
