This cruel dog owner has been arrested for allegedly covering his small pooch in blue paint in a video posted to social media.

The incident took place on Monday in the town of Las Charcas de Azua, in the southern Dominican Republic and suspect Juan Diego Perez has now been arrested.

In the video, a man can be seen painting a small dog in blue paint with a brush.

A woman can be heard saying “enough, do not put it in its eyes,” while a man says “that’s enough, stop. Everyone here is responsible for what could happen to this animal”.

After the video was posted online an investigation was launched and Perez was arrested by the Colonel of the police of the department of Azua, Ronald Felix Batista, who was accompanied by a prosecutor.

Reports state the suspect claimed he had done nothing wrong as he was trying to remove mange, a skin disease caused by parasitic mites, from the pooch with the paint.

He said: “I painted it because I wanted to take off the mange he had and after that I bathed it in the morning.

“I apologise (to society) because the dogs are mine and I do not hurt animals.”

Police officials said the suspect, who is a painter and blacksmith, remains under arrest and will be sent to a court soon.

He has been accused of breaking animal cruelty laws which include “exposing (animals) to any kind of poison, poisonous liquid, food, or infectious agent without taking reasonable precautions”.

The law stipulates that those found guilty can face prison sentences of between six months and a year.
