Local media report 23-year-old Nelias Ramirez Mateos, of Guatemalan nationality, died as a consequence of the accident while 84 injured victims are being treated in hospitals in the region.

The lorry reportedly overturned as the unnamed driver was going too fast in an area known as ‘La Curva de Matias’ (Matias’ Curve). The driver and co-driver both reportedly fled the scene after the accident.

Reports state federal, state and local authorities helped the migrants after the accident, among them a pregnant woman and several minors who were travelling in the container of the lorry, which was reportedly on its way to the Mexican border with the United States.

Local media report the lorry was crowded and the migrants were dehydrated.

The Mexican authorities will work with their Guatemalan counterparts to organise the repatriation of the victim’s remains.

Mexican federal agents are waiting to be allowed to interview the migrants to find out more about their journey.
