A 13-year-old boy in Ohio has been charged with murder after he was left with a neighbour’s toddler for a short while and when the mother returned the baby was bleeding and had a footprint on his shirt.
The teenage suspect, who has not been named, was arrested in the city of Lorain, which is located in Lorain County, in the US state of Ohio, on the evening of Wednesday 8th December after police responded to an incident in the 1600 block of East 30th Street during which they found an unresponsive toddler.
The toddler, who has been identified as 23-month-old Jessie Webber, was taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment but died. Jessie’s Xmas presents are still waiting for him, wrapped and under his grandmother’s Christmas Tree, according to local media.
The toddler’s mother, named in local reports as Heather Banbury, said: “He had blood coming out of his nose and his mouth and his eyes were open and he wasn’t conscious.”
Lorain police also say that they found a shoeprint on his shirt. Police arrested an unnamed 13-year-old neighbour, who has been charged with murder.
Tammy Banbury, the victim’s grandmother, is quoted in local media are saying: “I’m at a loss for words right now, because I don’t understand. I don’t understand how a 13-year-old can do that to a one-year-old.”
The grandmother said that her daughter had gone to a neighbour’s house to pick up dinner and left the two boys watching films.
She was reportedly not gone very long but when she returned to her home, the lights were reportedly off and she felt something was wrong.
Tammy said: “When she went in, the boy told her that Jessie was sleeping and when she turned on the light and she seen, he ran.”
The police said that the teenager was initially reported missing but was later found and arrested. He is currently at the county Juvenile Detention Home, the cops said.
The teenager said to have grown up with his alleged victim and his family, with the mothers of both boys being friends. He had always played with all of Tammy’s grandchildren, according to local media, and Lorain Police sergeant Tabitha Angello said the teenager did not have a known history of violence.
The investigation is ongoing.
