It was the same day the lucky Powerball ticket landed the mum – who has two sons – a USD 100,000 (GBP 81,500) prize, the North Carolina State Lottery said in a statement on Thursday, 1st December.

Hernandez told the North Carolina State Lottery: “I feel like she brought me my luck.”

The lucky winner added: “I’m so thankful.”

The North Carolina State Lottery said in the statement: “For Brenda Gomez Hernandez of Concord, 9th November will be a day she will never forget as, just hours after she went into labour and delivered a baby girl, a Powerball ticket delivered her a USD 100,000 prize.”

They added: “Hernandez, a 28-year-old housekeeper, matched numbers on four white balls and the Powerball to win USD 50,000 [GBP 40,750] in the 9th November drawing. The prize doubled to USD 100,000 when the 2X Power Play multiplier hit.”

Hernandez said: “When I found out I cried.”

She added: “I’m just so excited and happy.”

Lottery officials said: “Hernandez bought her USD 3 Quick Pick ticket from the QuikTrip on Warren C Coleman Boulevard in Concord.”

Hernandez said: “I have two sons and I used their birthdays to pick my numbers.”

She reportedly claimed her prize on Wednesday, 30th November at the North Carolina Lottery headquarters and, after required tax withholdings, took home USD 65,015 (GBP 53,000).

Hernandez told lottery officials that a large amount of her winnings would go toward paying for her house.
