This former Russian road safety official has sued a 12-year-old boy she left in hospital after she hit him on his bike and he scratched her Volkswagen SUV.

The boy’s family now have to pay over 1,300 GBP in damages to the woman after a Russian court sided with her.

The incident occurred when Lilia Khoruzhenko, who was an employee of the Ministry of Education and Science in the north-western Russian region of Murmansk Oblast, rammed into the unnamed 12-year-old on his bike in Yurkino village in the Kolsky district of the same region.

Khoruzhenko, who was reportedly in charge of children’s road safety in the region, was uninjured in the accident but the boy suffered several injuries and broken teeth, ending up in hospital.

The boy’s family reportedly decided not to file a report into the incident as they wanted to concentrate on his recovery, however Khoruzhenko herself filed a statement in 2019 against the boy for the scratches caused to her Volkswagen Tiguan SUV in the accident.

The official, who no longer holds her role, alleged the boy had broken traffic regulations which state that minors under the age of 14 can only ride their bicycles on pavements and bike paths.

The boy’s family ordered an independent examination to find out the true circumstances of the accident which reportedly concluded he was not guilty of infringements.

However, the local court has now sided with Khoruzhenko and ordered the family to pay her 120,000 RUB (1,375 GBP) in damages.

The boy has recovered from the accident but must wait until he turns 25 to have his front teeth replaced.

His family reportedly plan to appeal the court’s decision.
