This is the moment a 72-year-old woman driving to church smashes straight into a police van sending it rolling down the road and leaving one officer fighting for his life.

The accident captured on CCTV happened in the city of Biyska which is in the Russian Altai Krai region.

The elderly woman driver who cannot be seen is driving down the road on the Saturday evening last weekend when she crashed into the police van manufactured by UAZ, a Russian designed vehicle.

In the footage, one person who was in the police car is seen having been thrown out and lying injured on the ground.

According to a statement by local police, the pensioner had failed to notice a give way sign.

However, eyewitnesses told local media that because she was going slowly and was already on the road, the police officers should have given her right of way.

The driver of the police vehicle was taken to hospital in a critical condition, and is currently fighting for his life in the intensive care unit.

The names of the pensioner and the injured police officer were not revealed, nor was it revealed whether there was anyone else in the police car.

The case is currently being investigated and it is unclear if the pensioner has been arrested. It is also unclear where the police van was headed at the time of the incident and whether its emergency lights and siren were on.
