This is the dramatic moment an elderly man helps his granddaughter and a 12-year-old female neighbour make a perilous climb to safety as a raging fire spreads through the property behind them.

The fire started in the sitting room of the apartment of the 12-year-old neighbour who was at home alone, and who banged on the elderly neighbour’s door to get help at the property in Hangzhou, capital of East China’s Zhejiang Province.

The neighbour, surnamed Xia, was at home with his granddaughter at the time, and the trio fled to his fourth-floor balcony because the smoke and flames had already blocked off the entrance hallway.

Xia says he gave the two girls towels with which to cover their nose and mouth.

Dramatic footage taken by passers-by below show the three of them standing on the balcony as another neighbour, surnamed Yang, opens his window nearby and urges them to climb over.

Xia helps the two girls onto his balcony windowsill and into the adjacent home via the top of the air-conditioning unit.

As the fire in the girl’s flat grows increasingly larger, Xia himself is finally able to escape in the same manner.

The Hangzhou fire service put out the fire and says no one was injured during blaze.

They are still investigating the cause, which reports say is likely to be the home’s heating system.
