OAP Dies After Swarm Of Angry Asian Hornets Sting Him

A 73-year-old man has died after a swarm of angry Asian hornets stung him while he was spending a day out in the countryside with his wife.

The incident took place in the municipality of Poioi in the province of Pontevedra in the northern Spanish autonomous community of Galicia on Sunday at 10 in the morning.

According to the local authorities, the 73-year-old man, whose name has not been reported, had gone with his wife to a country house to spend the day when the couple were stung by a swarm of yellow-legged hornets (Vespa velutina), an invasive species of hornet indigenous to Southeast Asia.

Reports said that the local emergency service 112 confirmed that a medical helicopter landed next to a nearby church named Parroquia de Raxo to help the man.

Medics reportedly tried to reanimate him on the spot for at least 45 minutes but they could not save his life.

The man’s wife is not at risk, local media reported.

Reports claim that another 54 man, whose name is unknown, died in the nearby city of Santiago on 10th May after he was stung by the same species.

The yellow-legged hornet is reportedly an invasive species and it is believed to have arrived in France inside boxes of pottery from China in 2004.

They are known to attack in a group when their nest is threatened and several attacks on humans have been reported.
