This image shows an elderly couple diagnosed with COVID-19 holding hands in a Spanish hospital after they asked for their beds to be pushed together.

The couple, named in reports as Antonio, 90, and Antonia, 86, are being treated in the Mesa del Castillo Hospital in the Spanish city of Murcia in the southeastern region of the same name for coronavirus.

The hospital revealed that the couple had asked for the staff to put their beds together so they could hold hands, and they posted a touching image of the couples’ hands together after their wishes were granted.

The pair have reportedly been married for more than 50 years and the hospital wrote on social media: “They both have COVID-19. They asked us to join their beds to be able to hold each other’s hand. They look after each other and comfort us while we do our work. Our applause goes to them today.”

Nurse Lorena Romero who looks after the couple told reporters: “They told us that they were admitting two people and we put them directly next to each other because they told us they were a couple.”

She said Antonio asked if they could put the beds together, adding: “When Antonio asked me to join the beds I asked them how long they had been married, they told me ‘more than 50 years’. It seemed very tender to me that they wanted to hold hands in this situation.”

The medical staff agreed to join the beds and the couple now reportedly spend their days holding hands as they fight COVID-19.

Romero added: “Communicating with us is a bit difficult because we wear double masks, a screen and they pretty much can’t see our faces. We speak to them slowly so they understand and we try to transmit the most amount of humanity we can. We are the only people who have contact with them.”

Reports state Antonio brought a telephone into the hospital which the couple use to contact their children.
