This video shows a pensioner plunging down the side of a high-rise building from the 16th floor as onlookers scream after losing her grip while trying to escape through a bedroom window.

The unnamed elderly woman, who is reportedly around 90 years old, had locked herself in her bedroom before attempting the escape from her window, her daughter has revealed.

The daughter says her mum suffers from dementia and had been left in the hands of her carer, who was cooking in the kitchen inside the tower block in the Cangfengyuan Residential District.

Video shows neighbours in Xiuying District in Haikou, capital of South China’s Hainan Province, filming as the pensioner clings to the side of the high-rise building 19 storeys up.

She attempts to climb to the ground but loses her grip outside the 16th floor, plunging to the ground as helpless witnesses scream.

The Haikou fire service is not believed to have had time to respond to the incident before the pensioner fell.

The woman was declared dead at the scene.

Xiuying District police said they were still investigating the case.

In April, a 90-year-old woman with Alzheimer’s was seen escaping her high-rise home and climbing from a 14th-floor window in Chengdu, capital of Sichuan Province in south-western China.

She was fortunately rescued after running out of steam and choosing to rest on a building ledge.
