This 81-year-old coronavirus sufferer who was applauded after becoming the first patient to leave a Spanish hospital’s ICU has died 36 hours after being sent home.

According to local media, Carmen F.A., an 81-year-old woman, was hospitalised on 19th March and transferred to the ICU unit in the Hospital Clinico de Valladolid in the city with the same name in the north-western Spanish autonomous community of Castile and Leon.

Reports said that the woman recovered from COVID-19 on Monday after being intubated for respiratory problems, becoming the first coronavirus patient to make it out of the ICU unit in the Valladolid hospital.

The footage shows the moment Carmen F.A. is sent out of the ICU to a burst of applause from the medical staff, with the elderly woman clapping along with doctors and nurses.

Reports state that she died 36 hours after she left the ICU and the news has devastated the health professionals at the hospital. The cause of death is unclear.

The patient’s sister Teresa F.A. told local media: “Yes she is my sister, she left applauding and sending kisses and now she is being buried and I cannot go.”

According to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University, there have been 49,515 coronavirus cases in Spain with 5,367 patients recovered and 3,647 deaths.
