A young nurse and mother of three young children has been shot and killed for the bike she was riding on.

The horrifying incident was reported in the Colombian capital of Bogota when the woman was riding around a park in the Bosa neighbourhood with her partner.

The victim has been named as 27-year-old Jenny Cerquera, a pediatric nurse with three small children.

She was just enjoying some exercise on her day off with her partner, when they were attacked by two subjects, one of whom shot her in the chest.

Jenny’s partner Jorge Beltran told local media: “Two venezuelan guys robbed us and shot my girlfriend.”

Media sources report that when the attackers tried to rob her bicycle, the victim tried to hold on to it and there was a struggle.

Witness and local resident Luis Lopez told local media that the robbers took the bikes and then shot at them twice.

Lopez said: “A shot hit her chest and the other one went in the air as a warning. We couldn’t do anything.”

He confirmed that the victim’s boyfriend took her to the hospital in a taxi, where she died a few hours later.

The mayoress of the city, Claudia Lopez, posted on social media saying: “The assassination of Jenny Cerquera, a woman, mother of three children, nurse, it hurts me profoundly.”

Lopez also confirmed that one of the suspects has been captured.

She added: “One of the suspected killers has been detained and we are behind the other. I offer my condolences, affection and solidarity to her family and friends.”

Newsflash/Policia Bogota

The Bogota Police department was offering 10 million COP (2127 GBP) for anyone that can help them catch the men responsible. It is unclear if this helped identify the pair.

Local residents organised a vigil in homage for the victim and to spread awareness about the violence that cyclists are continuously subjected to in Bogota.

The assassination occurred during the Colombian coronavirus quarantine which began on March 25th.
