Nurse Dies As Gunman Opens Fire On Ambulance On Call

A nurse has been killed in Colombia when a gunman opened fire at an ambulance on an emergency call.

The incident took place on the road linking the municipalities of Cisneros and Yolombo in the north-western Colombian department of Antioquia in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The victim, identified as Diana Carolina Duque Ceballos, 22, was a nurse of the Hospital San Antonio Cisneros which confirmed her death.

Her colleague who was driving the ambulance at the time was injured in the attack and taken to a hospital in the city of Medellin for treatment. The unnamed ambulance driver is said to be in a stable condition.

Police spokesperson Ever Yovanni Gomez Reyes told the newspaper Semana: “A man suddenly opened fire on the ambulance and Diana Carolina Duque was shot.

“The victim had bullet wounds in different parts of her body and died on the way to hospital.

“The vehicle was coming back from Yolombo after attending a patient there.”

The city council has sent a message of condolence to the victim’s family and called on residents to respect ambulance workers on call.

The investigation is ongoing and so far no arrests have been made. The motive behind the shooting is still unknown.

Local newspaper Infobae said there has been an increase in violent crimes on roads around Yolombo in recent months.

On 11th December, feminist activist Elizabeth Betacur was shot dead near the municipality of Yolombo.
