North Carolina Police Officer Killed In Crash Just Two Days After Returning From Maternity Leave

This North Carolina police officer has been killed in a crash just two days after returning to active duty from maternity leave.

Officer Mia Goodwin of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department (CMPD), in the state of North Carolina, in the United States, leaves behind three children including her youngest, a four-month-old baby, as well as a husband.

She was working on an accident scene with colleagues when a secondary accident occurred, with a lorry hitting multiple police cars and injuring numerous officers.

Goodwin was the only officer to be injured fatally. She died at the scene from her injuries.

The CMPD Chief, Johnny Jennings, said: “It is with a heavy heart that I share the passing of
CMPD Officer Mia Goodwin. Officer Goodwin proudly served the University City Division. I ask for your thoughts and prayers for the family of Officer Goodwin and the CMPD family. Rest easy hero, we have watch from here.”

The North Carolina NC Trooper’s Association’s K-9 Search and Recovery team said on social media: “Our hearts go out to Charlotte Mecklenburg Police Department tonight.

“Police Officer Mia Goodwin was killed when a tractor-trailer struck her patrol car on southbound I-85 near W.T. Harris Boulevard.

“She was blocking traffic on the interstate at the scene of a previous crash when the tractor-trailer struck her patrol car at about 3:30 am.

“Officer Goodwin had served with the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department for over six years and was assigned to the University City Division. She is survived by her husband and three children ages 3, 1, and 4 months.”
