This is the moment a petrol station attendant is pummelled and left bleeding by a scooter rider after informing the customer that she could not give him 59 p in change.

PetroChina filling station employee Ms Xiao suffered cuts on her scalp after the much bigger assailant overpowered her and landed several dozen punches in the minutes-long assault.

Footage from the petrol station in Hunan Province’s Longhui County in Central China shows Ms Xiao being kicked in the midriff by the suspect, who has not been named.

As she stands up, the merciless scooter rider lands no fewer than 15 punches on her head.

She circles around a stopped car to confront the man, who continues his assault as Ms Xiao tries in vain to fight back.

At one point in the CCTV footage, Ms Xiao runs into the petrol station’s shop and comes out with a broom, but it does not stop the suspect from repeatedly hitting her on the head.

The scooter rider, who was with a female acquaintance, later attempts to ride off and escape, but he is stopped by Ms Xiao and her colleagues.

According to reports, the scooter rider tried to purchase 15 RMB (1.7 GBP) of fuel, but Ms Xiao informed him that he could only buy 10 RMB (1.1) or 20 RMB (2.3 GBP), as they were unable to give him 5 RMB (59 p) in change.

He insisted on filling up 15 RMB’s worth and argued with Ms Xiao before the assault began, reports said.

The scooter rider has been detained for the attack, while Ms Xiao was treated in hospital and later discharged.

It is still unclear what punishment the scooter rider will receive.
