Neymar has said he “did everything I could to get out of PSG but I am happy at my club” and compared himself to Lionel Messi during a ceremony to honour his 100th match with Brazil.

Neymar will play his 100th match with the Brazilian national team in their friendly today (Thursday) against Senegal in Singapore.

To pay homage to the feat, Brazilian World Cup Winner Bebeto has given the ParisSaint-Germain forward a national team shirt with ‘Neymar Jr.’ and the number ‘100’ written on the back.

During the ceremony, Neymar spoke with the media about his role in the national team and what comes with it.

He said: “I have been in the national team for 10 years. I have always been one of the most important players and one of the players that puts everything on his back. I never backed out of that.

“I have always carried out my role in the team well. When a player reaches a certain level, it is normal to get different treatment. Messi gets treated differently at Barcelona.

“Is it because he is more handsome? No. It is because of everything he does. It is part of football.”

Neymar went on to talk about the situation with his current club and the controversy that surrounded his possible exit during this summer’s transfer window.

Neymar said: “I am happy in the national team and I am happy at my club. Everyone knows what happened in the summer window and how I wanted to leave.

“I am comfortable and happy at the club today. I am not just happy in the national team. I started the season well. I will defend my club with my skin and teeth.

“I will give them 100 percent so we can achieve great things. If I am doing well in my club I will make it to the national team.”

The match against Senegal is a friendly set to be held in the Singapore National Stadium. Neymar participated in the 2014 and 2018 World Cups, however, he ended both tournaments injured.
