Cops were stunned when they found homemade pipe bombs with a swastika painted on them at a train station in Germany.

The shocking discovery took place at the train station in the town of Straussfurt, near the city of Erfurt, in the central German state of Thuringia on Sunday, 9th October.

An unnamed witness reportedly discovered a suspicious bedsheet on a bench at the station, on platform 4, with a colourful plastic bag on top of it.

They alerted the authorities to the suspicious set up and the cops arrived on the scene to investigate.

They reportedly could not believe their eyes when they looked into the bag and found two homemade pipe bombs with a thick black swastika painted on them.

It is currently unclear how they were planned to be detonated, as the police did not find a detonator, nor did they find any setup that would allow remote detonation, according to German daily Bild.

One of the explosives was reportedly detonated on site in a controlled manner as it was too dangerous to move, with the second being diffused and secured by the bomb squad.

It is currently unclear how the bombs ended up on the platform and why they were put there, with local media suspecting that it could be down to the actions of right-wing extremists whose plot went wrong or who were sending a message designed to intimidate.

The investigation is ongoing.
