This footage shows an anonymous passer-by donating a large box of surgical masks to Chinese police before quickly riding away as officials announce a critical shortage of medical supplies amid the Wuhan coronavirus outbreak.

CCTV footage from Jiantiao Police Station in the county of Sanmen, which is in East China’s Zhejiang Province, shows a helmet-wearing electric bike rider walking up to the front gate.

The video dated 31st January shows the as yet unidentified citizen hoisting the large box of medical supplies over the metal gate and tossing it into the police station courtyard.

He then rides off before officers discover and open the box, which they say contained 225 KN95-grade surgical masks.

The sought-after medical gear, which is thought to be more effective at preventing infection than traditional one-time use variants, is now almost impossible to buy as stock shortages hit every corner of the country.

Jiantiao Police Station said it had donated all 225 KN95 masks to front-line medical workers at the county’s health commission on 2nd February.

Officers said they hoped to track down the kind citizen, who is one of several dozen individuals reported to have donated medical supplies to police and medics at the height of the viral outbreak.

On 3rd February, China’s foreign ministry admitted it “urgently needed” medical supplies such as surgical masks, hazmat gear and goggles.

Its factories are producing roughly 20 million surgical masks a day, but the figure is believed to be well short of the growing demand.
