A dog who had all of her paws chopped off by thugs has saved tiny puppies found on the verge of death in the Ukraine by warming them up with her body.

Animal rescue official said that they had found 11 puppies of which nine are showing signs of severe hypothermia after being abandoned on the streets in the middle of winter.

It is unclear how the puppies came to be alone when they were spotted on a street in the city of Brody, Lvov Oblast, north-western Ukraine.

There were taken to the shelter, where it was then decided to place the puppies with disabled Maya, who had all her four paws cut off and has been recuperating ahead of plans to give her prosthetic limbs.

According to the animal activists, she instantly took charge of the four washing them to restore their circulation and warming them with her body as they slowly recovered from their ordeal.

According to the deputy chairman of the shelter, Oksana Cherniy: “The puppies are being fed with baby food, they feel safe and don’t whine. Maya is taking care of them and provides them with motherly love and protection. They clearly feel very comfortable and safe with her.”

Meanwhile the animal group are pressing ahead with plans to fit prosthetic limbs for Maya that have been ordered from a specialist in Bulgaria.

Oksana said: “We are facing difficulties with the colder weather. It rains and snows outside so we can’t fully organise the dog’s rehab. It was easy in the summertime when we were taking it to the lake where she could swim but now we need to look at her walking skills. We are beginning with the front paws and then we will move to the rear ones.”

Maya was found in May, 2019, with horrific injuries and at first was terrified of noise and especially of children. But she has since shown signs of starting to trust again, and also seems to slowly be getting used to her artificial limbs in early trials.
