In total, 111 people were rescued in the operation while five people were found dead and taken aboard the rescue boat.

The mother who lost her child was identified as a refugee from the West African country of Conakry who shouts: “Where is my baby? I lose my baby. Find my baby, find my baby.”

She was not named but was the mother of Joseph, the six months old boy who was rescued from the sea with respiratory arrest and despite efforts of doctors on board of the boat of Open Arms he later died.

The migrants in the footage were pulled from the water north of Sabratha off the coast of Libya by the rescue boat operated by the Spanish charity Proactiva Open Arms.

The baby was also pulled from the sea apparently still alive, but later died on the rescue boat from cardiac arrest. Also rescued was a pregnant woman.

All of the refugees involved in the incident had been trying to head to Europe to start new lives.

The refugees were taken to Lampedusa island in Italy although a three-month-old baby girl and her mother that were in a serious condition have been airlifted to hospital in Malta.
