This is the moment a toddler standing on her tiptoes while looking at fish in a pond accidentally plunges into the water as her hapless mum stares at her mobile phone.

Footage from the city of Fosha, which is in South China’s Guangdong Province, shows the mother, Ms Wei, standing next to the circular pond while leaning against the metal railings.

Her two-year-old, who has not been named, stands on her tiptoes next to her while trying to get a good look at the fish swimming in the water below on the afternoon of 27th September.

However, she loses her balance and falls forwards, flipping over the railing and plunging into the water below.

Ms Wei is seen staring intently at her mobile phone at the time of the accident, with the parent unable to react as her child falls, just inches away from her.

Before Ms Wei can jump in the water, patrolling officer Tan Wenru rushes into frame and leaps into the pond.

He plucks the toddler out of the water in seconds and hands her to other arriving officers from the Guicheng Police Station.

The tot, who was not harmed, is quickly reunited with her mother, the video shows.

Officer Tan revealed his phone short-circuited after coming in contact with the pond water.

He said: “That’s a quick fix. The important thing is the girl wasn’t harmed.

“I didn’t think too much at the time. I was just trying to save her.”
