The mum of a man on trial for stabbing his sister to death – and who told cops some people think he is God – has said she loves him regardless.

It is alleged that Eyob E. stabbed his sister Eyerus to death at Vienna’s main train station in the Austrian capital in January this year.

Eyerus E., 25, died after being brutally stabbed nine times allegedly by her own brother, 22-year-old Eyob E., a chef with a kitchen knife which he had hidden behind his back.

Prosecutor Martin Ortner said: “He intended to kill with these heavy stabs. Anything other than intention to murder is not possible.”

Despite being accused of murdering his sister, Eyob’s mother Hirut is standing by her son. She said: “He is my child, I love him regardless.”

Eyob’s lawyer Asrtrid Wagner who visited him yesterday said: “He is currently on the hospital wing and is getting medication, but wanted to talk to his mother before the trial starts. I was able to make this possible.”

Eyob E. holds a Spanish passport. He is appearing in court this week but will not be prosecuted as he has been diagnosed as suffering from paranoid schizophrenia.

The court will decide whether Eyob E. will be detained in a high security institution for mentally deranged criminals rather than a normal prison.

According to the expert reports, Eyob E. was not accountable for his actions at the time of the attack and therefore cannot be held responsible.

CCTV footage at the station caught the attack on camera. His sister had travelled from Spain to Vienna together with their half sister as they were worried about their brother’s behaviour.

As the young woman approached Eyob to talk to him, he allegedly reached for the knife and stabbed her nine times. Eight security guards rushed to the scene and held him whilst others attended to the woman, but she died at the scene as a result of stab wounds to the heart, liver and lungs.

Following Eyob’s arrest, he said to police “Some people think I am God” which made them doubt his accountability and an expert witness team was brought in to assess his mental state.

The trial continues.
