A 30-year-old mother has been sentenced to 10 and a half years in prison for beating her toddler son to death.

Liliana Jacquelina Luchessi lived with her two-year-old son Jair Emanuel and partner Roque Bruno Ezequiel Pacheco, the boy’s father, in the city of San Luis in the northern Argentine province of the same name.

Luchessi beat her son on 16th June 2014 and an ambulance was sent to the home, however paramedics found the boy unresponsive and tried to resuscitate him.

The toddler was pronounced dead on arrival by the time they reached the city’s Juan Domingo Peron Hospital.

As medics found bruises and burns on the child’s body, they alerted the local authorities.

Autopsy results confirmed that Jair Emanuel had died as a result of internal bleeding caused by heavy blows.

An investigation into the boy’s father failed to prove his involvement and he was never charged with his son’s death, according to reports.

Luchessi was arrested in February 2017 with her solicitor Pascual Celdran asking that she be absolved from the crime because she suffers from mental illness and has a history of abuse.

Celdran told local media: “She has been diagnosed with a learning disability and receives benefits for the condition.

“She also has speech difficulties and was born with a malformed foot that made it difficult for her move around.”

Prosecutor Ernesto Lutens successfully argued that the boy’s injuries could not have been caused by a fall or domestic accident and said the mother displayed indifference to her son’s death.

He said: “There was no immediate assistance, and the parent’s reaction in the moment of the event was one of calmness and absence.”
