A mum who was filmed torturing her young daughter because she allegedly urinated in front of two boys has been jailed for 18 months.

The incident took place in their home in the neighbourhood of Mimar Sinan in the district of Korfez in the north-western Turkish city of Kocaeli and footage of the incident quickly spread online.

The mother and her partner was subsequently arrested and now the mum, named as Nurcan Serce by local media outlet Haberler, has been jailed for 18 months while the victim’s stepfather, Hayrettin Bahar, has been acquitted.

The incident took place last February when the images, filmed in 2019, were shared on social media.

After the footage went viral, the daughter was taken into state care, as were her five siblings.

Serce has six children, two from her current partner and four children from her first marriage, all of whom were reportedly placed under state protection following the incident.

The two suspects were questioned by police and sent to prison pending trial.

The mother was on trial for attempted murder at the Kocaeli 6th High Criminal Court.

At the end of the trial, Serce, 36, is quoted as saying: “My children are still in the dormitory and they have not given me my children yet. I want my children back, I miss my children so much. I got a new job, opened an office for myself with the support of my family. I regret what happened, I demand my acquittal.”

Dr Mustafa Oezdemir, an expert in forensic medicine, testified in court after the images of the abuse were shown. He said: “it seems that a great deal of pressure was applied on the child, but it is impossible to say how much.”

The mum, who was on trial for attempted murder and faced life in prison, was in the end jailed for one year and six months for causing ‘intentional injury’.

In the video, the young girl’s mother is seen forcefully holding her down on the sofa and suffocating her with a pillow over her face. The young girl, who begs for her mum to stop, tries to break free but to no avail.

Her partner, identified as Hayrettin Bahar, who is filming the incident, makes no attempt to stop what is happening.

One of the children stated that Bahar, age not disclosed, constantly provoked Serce to beat them and said: “When my mother beat us, Hayrettin would bring a stick and ask my mother to beat us with that stick.”

However, Serce insisted that she was not a bad mother and denied her children’s claim that it happened regularly, saying: “I watched the video on social media. That video has no explanation. My child asked me to stop while crying ‘mum, please’ and I hit her despite hearing this. It hurts me now so much.”

She added: “I was going through a tough period at that time.”
