This is the moment a young mum appears to film herself and her screaming family in their vehicle after they are caught in the crossfire between cops and armed gangsters.

The incident took place in the municipality of Rio Bravo in the north-eastern Mexican state of Tamaulipas during a confrontation between police officers and suspected drug traffickers.

According to local media, the shootout started at around 3.45pm on 25th February when an armed gang suddenly attacked police officers.

Reports said that after the 90-minute confrontation, which involved blockading several roads, the municipality returned to normal.

In the footage, the woman can be seen struggling to lie low in the vehicle that appears to be a people carrier as several terrified children scream and cry as the gunshots ring out. It is unclear from the footage if there were other adults in the car.

As several kids scream in fear, the woman says: “Down. Get on the floor. Everything will be all right.”

They were reportedly in a hospital car park at the time.

The state government confirmed that nobody was killed in the shootout.

Meanwhile, local media said the municipality of Rio Bravo has been experiencing a crime wave in recent weeks.

On Saturday, a doctor named Raul Prieto was reportedly shot dead after a cartel hitman mistook him for someone else.

Days before the shootout with cops, suspected members of the Gulf Cartel filmed themselves executing a member of a rival gang, according to local media.
