This abandoned pram and blanket on the beach is all that remained after a mum allegedly dumped by her boyfriend reportedly waded into the sea and drowned her two children.

The 28-year-old woman, identified only by the first name of Ekaterina, had travelled to the small port town of Vilyuchinsk located in Kamchatka Krai, Russia, where she placed the tiny blanket on the ground next to the pram.

People walking past said they had spotted her five-year-old son sitting on the blanket and playing with a small spade in the sand. In the pram was her baby daughter.

According to eyewitnesses, it was a typical family scene, and they also did not raise eyebrows when she took both of the children and started to wade into the cold water.

Although the temperature seemed a little low, it was not uncommon for some parents to take a dip as they believed it strengthened their children’s immune systems.

But they were horrified when they realised that she had carried on going, and eventually the heads of the children disappeared under the water, according to local media.

At the same time, she was heard screaming: “Everyone left me, nobody needs me, I do not need anyone anymore.”

One of the eyewitnesses, a man, told local media he threw himself into the water and tried to reach but then she too had disappeared under the waves.

The panicked man eventually managed to pull all three out, but the baby was already dead, and despite attempts to reanimate the five-year-old boy, he too was also declared dead at the scene, reports said.

He said the young woman had not wanted to be saved, and had fought against him bringing her and her children to safety.

The mother is currently hospitalised and receiving psychiatric treatment.

According to people who knew her, she has suffered a series of bad relationships, with her first partner, with whom she had had the son, dumping her shortly after the birth, and she had then thought she had found happiness with a man from Central Asia who she had helped to get a passport after they were married.

But when it was no longer necessary for him to stay with her for his passport, he had dumped her for another woman even though they had since had a baby daughter together, reports said.

Worse, she had gone heavily into debt for her lover and then he abandoned her without any offer of helping her to tackle the loan, and she had decided as a result that she could no longer cope.

Police confirmed they are investigating the case and said that despite her mental condition, the Investigative Committee of the Investigative Committee in the Kamchatka Territory had initiated a criminal case against the suspected child killer.

They said the woman faces eight to 20 years in prison if convicted.
