A 49-year-old mother has been arrested for drowning her 10-year-old daughter in the bath after allegedly drugging her with around 80 pills used to treat insomnia and anxiety.

The suspect, identified as Maria Angels Freixas from the city of Girona in the eastern Spanish region of Catalonia, has reportedly been denied bail and was sent to preventative prison as the investigation into the girl’s death continues.

She called the emergency services and confessed to the crime, according to local media.

Reports said that she admitted dissolving the Lormetazepam pills in a glass of water to soothe her daughter’s sore throat and waited for her to fall asleep before drowning her in the bathtub.

Lormetazepam is licenced in the UK as a short-term treatment of moderately severe insomnia and has effects which can combat anxiety.

According to local media, she also confessed to the crime in a text message to local journalist Albert Soler as well as to a neighbour who popped round and saw the young victim lifeless in the bath.

The local authorities said the woman was separated from her partner, and there have not been any previous reports of violence.

The emergency services arrived at the house and tried to revive the 10-year-old, but to no avail.

A preliminary investigation said the girl had died of drowning, but the police are still waiting for the autopsy results to confirm the cause of death.

Local media said that the mother had been treated at a psychiatric hospital several times and was last released on Christmas Eve.

If found guilty and responsible for her actions, the mother could face between 20 and 25 years in prison for killing her daughter, according to reports.

She is being held in a preventative prison as the investigation continues.
