A mother and two children have died and another 30 hospitalised after fumigation was carried out in this Romanian apartment block.

The incident has caused outrage in the country because ambulances were constantly turning up at the apartment after fumigation took place on November 16 but as all of the symptoms were different on each occasion, nobody had realised that there was a major problem.

The apartment building which is at number 8 Mioritsa street in the city of Timisoara, in western Romania, had recently undergone a fumigation which is being blamed initially for the deaths and hospitalisations.

Three different hospitals were needed to cope with the dead and injured with eight adults at the main municipal hospital, three adults at the County hospital, and 19 children being treated at the “Louis Turcanu” hospital.

One of the children that died was aged three, and the other was only 10 days old while their mother aged 29 was the third person to die.

The company which carried out the fumigation on the fourth floor of the property was identified as local company “Bistim SRL”.

According to Dorel Sandesc, the head of the Anaesthesia an Intensive Care section of the Timisoara County Hospital, all of the three that died including the adult woman had a very low body weight meaning that the toxins were more concentrated in their smaller bodies.

He added that while the fumigation was the prime suspect, it was still not confirmed which specific toxin provoked the deaths.

He added: “I don’t want to speculate, yet it was certainly something very strong. We have already contacted experts in Berlin. They are specialists at the centre dealing with toxin incidents. They also confirmed that the toxins attacked the dead on a cellular level.”

The company has already been ordered to provide documentations and details of what chemicals were used, and these are now being examined by experts.
