Mum And Daughters Die In Horror Smash On Brazilian Motorway

A young mum and her two daughters have died in a head-on crash with a lorry on a Brazilian motorway.

Daiani Thibes de Campos and her daughters Dainary Mello Gastao and Leonara Milena Mello Gastao, who came from the municipality of Laurentino, were killed on the BR-470 motorway near the municipality of Rio do Sul in the southern Brazilian state of Santa Catarina.

The 34-year-old mother was killed on the spot while her daughters, aged 13 and 8, were taken to hospital in a serious condition where they later succumbed to their injuries, according to the news site G1.

Daiani’s niece Jaqueline Merten Campos said the family was returning from a trip when the accident took place.

According to the police, the mother tried to overtake a heavy goods vehicle that was stopped on the highway due to an electrical failure.

The police said she crossed into the opposite lane to avoid colliding with the broken-down vehicle and crashed head-on with another lorry coming in the opposite direction.

The fire brigade said both lorry drivers were uninjured in the accident as the investigation continues.
