Local media report Alonso was cycling with three other athletes in a training session when he was hit and killed.

The other cyclists were reportedly not involved in the accident as they were riding in front of the 52-year-old and were able to avoid being hit.

Alonso was reportedly considered a pioneer for triathletes in the area and was one of the most popular athletes in Galicia. He also participated in the popular ‘Ironman’ race.

Shortly after the accident, the A Coruna Civil Protection made a post saying: “We want to express our deepest sadness for the passing of Pedro Alonso.

“Fireman at the Arteixo fire station, former lifeguard and a volunteer in our unit until 2005. This afternoon he has left us doing what he loved, riding his bike. RIP partner.”

The post included a collage with several pictures of Alonso doing volunteer work.

It is unclear what caused the fatal accident or if there is an open investigation.
