This was the scene after a motorway crash barrier cut through the front of a man’s car, went through his groin and impaled him to his seat during a crash.

The man lost control of his car and hit the crash barrier on the Nandaliang Expressway near the city of Dazhou in south-western China’s Sichuan Province.

The impact of the accident broke the steel crash barrier and a length of metal shot through the front of the car, went right through the driver’s groin and emerged from the back of his seat.

Firefighters raced to the scene after eyewitnesses raised the alarm and they used specialist cutting equipment to free the driver, whose name has not been released, from his car.

The man was then taken by ambulance, with a one metre (3ft 3 ins) long length of steel still sticking through his body, to the nearby Quxian People’s Hospital.

He was later transferred to the Dazhou Central Hospital where doctors had to call firefighters to come to the operating theatre to cut away more of the pipe so they could operate to remove the rest of it.

The hospital has not yet released any information about the driver’s condition.

Police have launched an investigation into the accident but have not yet commented pending the outcome of their inquiries.
