A Moroccan man who has lived in France since the age of six years and went through the French education system has been refused citizenship for beating his wives.

The Council of State (Conseil d’État) in refusing to grant citizenship, said the man’s behaviour was contrary to the values of French society.

The Council of State is the French national government body that acts as legal advisor of the executive branch and as the supreme court for administrative justice.

The officials heard that the man had been convicted of deliberate violence against his two successive wives, reports Le Point.

The decision was therefore made to refuse citizenship despite the fact that his brother has already been granted French nationality.

French law which stipulates that a “lack of assimilation” can be a reason to reject the application and that a man or woman can not become citizens of France unless their way of life conforms to the values of the French Republic.

A similar example was found in 2018 where French citizenship was denied to an Algerian woman after she refused to shake hands with the prefecture’s secretary-general during a ceremony because he was a man.
