Morata said the pressure was so high at Chelsea “I had stopped enjoying football” and revealed “when I was able to get the defender off me, my teammates would look at me and I knew that they felt like I was not going to do anything good with the ball” assuring “I felt really bad”.

Morata said “I could not take the pressure” adding: “I felt a pinch (pinched nerve) one day, I went to Germany on a day trip to get treatment and when I returned, we spent the night in hospital because Alice was ill too.

“I played two days later and felt another pinch (pinched nerve) and played a horrible match. I had messages telling me not to worry and there will be better times in the future and I threw it against the wall.”

Alice Campello, 24, is Morata’s Italian model wife.

Looking back, Morata said: “I wish I had matured earlier when I was 20-22 years old but I had never faced such an extreme situation.

“I used to tell my wife that we should leave for somewhere as far as possible in January because I could not take the pressure.”

When the opportunity to leave Chelsea came up in his second year at the club Morata said: “I had six or seven good offers and Chelsea wanted me to stay but I decided to do what I had wanted since a couple of summers before”

As for his future and a potential return to the Premier League, the Spanish striker was clear on his intention to stay at Atletico saying: “I have never been at one club for many years.

“This time it is up to me. If I can play well enough I will be here for many years to come. I would love to retire at Atletico. I still have five or six good years left.”

Spain are set to play Malta on 15th November and Romania 18th November in EURO 2020 qualifying.
