This is the moment a huge wave sweeps a group of tourists off their feet on a remote Icelandic beach moments after a tidal wave reportedly injured a Chinese visitor.

The incident was filmed on Reynisfjara Beach near Iceland’s southernmost village of Vik i Myrdal moments after a Chinese tourist in his thirties was toppled by a huge wave.

According to on-duty patrol cop Sigurour Sigurbjornsson, the tourist managed to struggle back to shore with a shoulder injury.

The emergency services attended him at around 3pm before taking him to a nearby hospital for further checks.

Sigurbjornsson filmed the choppy sea just after the man left to go to hospital and the footage shows screaming tourists being swept off their feet by a sudden wave as the cameraman repeatedly says “idiots”.

Another video shows a group of tourists being trapped against the rocks by the huge waves.

According to local media, the waves at Reynisfjara are notoriously dangerous and the area has been the scene of numerous accidents and several deaths in recent years.

The beach is well sign-posted but tourists often fail to keep a safe distance from the strong waves.
