This is the moment a thief gets into a struggle with a security guard who was on his first day on the job in an incident that left both of them fatally injured after they shot each other.

The incident took place in the Niza neighbourhood in the city of Cucuta, which is located in the Norte de Santander department, in north-eastern Colombia, on the border with Venezuela, on Tuesday 28th December.

The footage shows the thief apparently arriving with an accomplice on a motorbike.

The thief goes straight for the victim, who tries to defend himself, before both reportedly open fire on each other.

The thief collapsed first, according to local media outlet Infobae, which also reported that the 22-year-old security guard, who has been named as Miguel Angel Garcia, managed to holster his firearm and shoot the suspect despite having been shot first.

The footage shows the security guard, who is in the company of four women and a man, noticing the motorcycle at the beginning of the incident, but he looks back at his phone, which gives the criminal the opportunity to act.

The thief, who has been named as 25-year-old Venezuelan man Raiquet Samuel Machado Sanchez, reportedly collapsed a few streets away and succumbed to his injuries on the spot.

The motorcyclist managed to escape and is currently being sought by police.

It is unclear what kind of establishment the security guard was stationed outside and it is also unclear what the would-be robber was hoping to take.
