Moment Shaky Old Apartment Block Collapses Down Hill After Indian City Hit By Landslides

This is the moment a seven-storey apartment block collapses down a hill after a series of landslides damaged its poorly-built foundations.

The building collapsed in the Kachighati area of the city of Shimla in the Indian state of Himachal Pradesh on Thursday, 30th September.

Local media said the building collapse was brought on by landslides triggered by days of heavy rainfall.

The news site India Today reported that many of the buildings in the area are poorly built and positioned on hills making them particularly vulnerable to collapse.

In the footage, the seven-storey building is seen slowly lurching forwards before the foundations give way and it crashes down the hill.

As it hits the ground, a huge plume of debris and dust engulfs nearby homes.

No one was injured during the collapse as the building had already been evacuated due to concerns about its stability.

Aditya Negi, Shimla Deputy Commissioner, told Tribune India: “All eight families were evacuated this afternoon and are being rehabilitated and as such there was no loss of human life.”

Abhishek, who lives in a neighbouring building, said: “We were hearing crackling sounds since last night and the residents started moving out and the building was totally vacated by this afternoon.”

Several buildings in the vicinity were affected by the collapse as their foundations were shaken and cracks have appeared in the walls.

Suresh Bharadwaj, Urban Development Minister, visited the site and instructed the local authorities to provide relief to all families affected by the incident.
