This is the moment an Israeli Defence Force (IDF) tank lurches forward while being loaded onto a trailer and turns upside down.

The incident left the soldier who was guiding the truck onto the vehicle leaping for his life, and the tank which ended up on its roof belching out thick smoke with the occupants trapped inside.

The incident reportedly happened when the IDF Merkava tank was being loaded onto the lorry during a military training exercise that was taking place in the Jordan Valley yesterday (Sunday).

For some reason, after safely climbing onto the back of the truck in the correct position, it then accelerates quickly forward and flips upside down as it gets to the other end, almost running over the soldier who’s directing it into place.

Other soldiers then rush over and one person can be heard calling for medics although nobody was reportedly seriously hurt in the incident.

The driver of the tanker who was a 24-year-old reserve soldier was taken to the Hadassah Hospital in Jerusalem where he was treated for bruising, but otherwise, suffered no other more serious injuries. He is expected to be released today after being kept in hospital overnight.

Military commanders said it was being investigated, and added that a temporary stop on the movement of all military vehicles had been ordered until the results of the enquiry were complete.
