This is the moment a patient with amputated legs is forced to drag himself along a hospital corridor in a clip which has sparked outrage online.
The incident was filmed at the Iglinskay Regional Hospital in the south-western Russian republic of Bashkortostan in August 2019, but the footage has only been publicly released now.
One clip shows a male patient with no legs dragging himself along a hospital corridor.
In the second video, another patient with leg injuries is seen lying on a mattress on the floor.
However, a hospital spokesperson explained that the patient in the first video is a smoker who continues to break the rules by going outside for a cigarette on the premises.
The man’s wheelchair is unable to access the hidden area where he usually goes to smoke, according to reports.
Head of the surgical department Ilgiz Yusupov said: “He was hiding the fact that he is a smoker from staff. He was admitted with severe frostbite and we had to amputate his legs.”
Yusupov added that the man has remained in the hospital for 10 months following his surgery as he has nowhere else to go.
A hospital spokesperson explained that the patient in the second video only remained on the floor for a short period of time because the nurse was unable to lift him onto the bed on her own in that moment.
Despite the hospital’s explanations, the local authorities have confirmed that they are investigating the incidents.
