This is the moment an Italian firefighter lowers himself into a deep water well to rescue a trapped pooch.

The incident took place in Serra San Bartolo in the municipality of Vittoria in the province of Ragusa in the Italian island of Sicily when the dog reportedly fell around 30 metres (98 feet) into the well and began to whine.

The mountain and river rescue brigade was called to the scene and one firefighter lowered himself into the well to save the poor pooch.

In the footage, the dog is seen scampering onto a ledge at the bottom of the well just as the firefighters arrive.

A pulley system is set up for one burly firefighter to descend into the deep well and put the dog in a bag which is then lifted out.

A man comforts the dog when it is freed from the bag and the firefighter is seen being lifted out of the well by colleagues.

The video ends with the firefighter posing with the rescued dog before the brigade leaves in a red engine.

According to local media, the rescue operation took several hours and the dog was returned to its concerned owner afterwards.
