This is the moment a freak tornado forms on rice paddies before ripping right through the centres of two unsuspecting villages.

The vortex of destructive wind formed on farms belonging to the villages of Tangboyang and Tangdong, which are in the coastal city of Weihai in East China’s Shandong Province.

CCTV footage shows the violent tornado passing a village road at 4:45pm local time on 28th August, kicking up large amounts of dust and sending debris flying across the screen.

The spinning column was seen and recorded by residents of both villages who watched as it moved through rice paddies, vegetable patches and orchards before entering the main roads.

According to a statement from the Emergency Management Office of Weihai’s Wendeng District, where both villages are located, the tornado caused injuries to nine villagers.

The victims were taken to hospitals and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, the office said.

The freak weather incident damaged no fewer than 167 homes, ripping off tiles and damaging exposed walls and corrugated steel roofs.

Video taken in the aftermath of the tornado also appears to show at least one tractor having been overturned during the incident, while shattered tiles and other rubble is left scattered across the ground.

Wendeng District officials said they were still assessing the damage, while temporary accommodation has been arranged for affected residents.
