Mexico To Auction Off El Chapos Houses For Over 1m GBP

The Mexican authorities are set to auction off El Chapo’s seized properties for over 1 million GBP.

Ricardo Rodriguez Vargas, the Director of the Institute for Returning What Was Robbed To The People (Instituto Para Devolverle Al Pueblo Lo Robado) said that among the nine properties that will be auctioned on 10th November, six of them are located in the state of Sinaloa, north-western Mexico and total asking price is 32.5 million MXN (1,319,072 GBP)

One of the houses that will be auctioned is locatedon Rio Humaya street in the colony of Guadalupe, in Culiacan city, where Joaquin ‘El Chapo’ Guzman hid before being arrested again in January 2016 after his escape from prison.

The property reported has two floors and comes furnished. It is listed at 2 million MXN (80,697 GBP) plus taxes.

Another property located on Constituyentes Emiliano Garcia street in Culiacan where Guzman stayed whilst trying to avoid the Army of Mexico is being sold for 2.4 million MXN (96,836 GBP).

The largest property that will be auctioned might have belonged to Griselda Lopez, mother of Ovidio Guzman Lopez, the son of the drug lord who was arrested in a police operation in October and later released due to the wave of violence which hit the city of Culiacan.

The house is located on Cerro de las Siete Gotas street in Culiacan, it has three floors, 700 metres of property and is listed at 11.2 million MXN (451,900 GBP).

Local media report the six properties were all connected by tunnels to the water system of Culiacan.

Rodriguez Vargas said during the press statement: “This is a good opportunity for citizens and investors to buy a property for a good price and with good conditions” and said the auctions will be used to finance music bands for children in the state of Oaxaca.

The auction will also include houses, vehicles, boats and jewellery with a total of 45 lots on 10th November.

The auction will include two ships anchored in a port in the state of Tabasco and listed at 22 million MXN (887,662 GBP), as well as 24 vehicles of two types: some of them luxury vehicles, such as Mustang, Jaguar and Mercedes, and other more normal vehicles. All of them are listed at 1.8 million MXN (72,626 GBP).
