Meanwhile, others speculated that the panic-buying may have been sparked by rumours that the country could be facing a total alcohol ban.

Journalist Tono Moreno wrote on Twitter: “Panic purchasing in San Pedro Nuevo Leon following the contingency plan caused by the rumour that the sale of beer, wine and spirits is about to stop.”

According to local media, local authorities have suspended the production and distribution of alcohol in the states Nuevo Leon, Campeche and Tabasco as they considered it a non-essential activity.

Jaime Heliodoro Rodriguez Calderon, the Governor of Nuevo Leon where the suspension is starting today, told local media: “Why buy alcohol now and cause a problem? Someone can be infected, you are creating risk. You will leave the shop infected and you will infect your children.”

Reports said the government of Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador launched a plan to stop the spread of COVID-19 on 23rd of March by suspending non-essential activities.

According to the latest data from the Johns Hopkins University, Mexico has confirmed 1,510 cases of COVID-19 with 50 deaths and 633 people recovered.
