This 13-year-old Mexican girl has been raped and strangled to death by three of her so-called friends near the US border before being dumped in a sheet among a mountain of rubbish on a vacant lot.
The incident took place in the city of Ciudad Juarez, which is located in the Mexican state of Chihuahua on the Mexican border with Texas, just south of the US city of El Paso.
The victim has been named only as Rosa Isabel MC and she has just been buried by her friends and family after a moving funeral at the Santa Maria de la Montana Church before her body was taken to Technical High School Number 41 in the Enrique Guzman neighbourhood where she was enrolled.
She was raped and murdered a week ago and three minors were detained on 5th October.
They have been named in local media as Kevin, 17, Alexis, 17, and Victor Manuel, 16, and they have allegedly confessed to the police that they killed Rosa, who was better known to her friends as ‘Rosita’.
The Attorney General of the state of Chihuahua, Javier Fierro Duarte, said that they were able to arrest the three minors thanks to information from the victim’s entourage.
The detainees allegedly confessed to having sexually assaulted the minor before strangling her to death and discarding her lifeless corpse in a vacant lot, according to the same source, who also said that there was a growing problem of marginalisation and violence in the city.
That part of the country also ranks highest in terms of gender violence, with the United Nations listing Mexico as one of the most violent countries for women in the world. The UN said that 66 percent of all women aged 15 and over had experienced some form of violence in their lives.
After their arrest, the minors were brought before a specialised judge that deals with adolescents, Mariano Moctezuma Castillo, who charged them with aggravated femicide and aggravated rape, according to the Superior Court of Justice of the state of Chihuahua.
They have been incarcerated pending trial as a precautionary measure.
The investigation is ongoing.
The case has sparked outrage among local residents and netizens who are demanding justice for Rosita.
According to information from the Specialised Prosecutor’s Office for Women, so far this year, 143 femicides have been reported in Ciudad Juarez alone.
