Mexican Figure Skater Drops Out Of World Championships After Plane Loses His Luggage

Mexican figure skater Donovan Carrillo has dropped out of the 2022 World Figure Skating Championships in France after the airline lost his luggage, leaving him without his skates.

The World Figure Skating Championships is being held in Montpellier, in France, between 21st and 27th March.

Carrillo, 22, a four-time Mexican national champion, had travelled to France to take part in the competition. However, his skates reportedly got lost by the airline, which was not named in reports.

The figure skater, a fan favourite at the Beijing 2022 Olympics, was scheduled to perform on 24th March, but had to pull out due to his missing skates.

The mishap did not end there, as the Mexican Olympic Committee reported an unconfirmed claim that the skates had been found on Wednesday and that he would take part at his scheduled time.

It was then left to the skater to report that this was not the case and that he was unable to perform.

The Mexican Olympic Committee said after the mishap: “We apologise for the tweet where it was reported that Donovan Carrillo’s luggage had arrived and he would participate in the World Figure Skating Championships. We received this information from an unconfirmed source, a situation that will not happen again.”

Carrillo arrived in Montpellier earlier this week, but the skates did not turn up after the airline lost his luggage.

According to local reports, Carrillo still does not know the whereabouts of his missing skates, and he is expected to make a public announcement soon in the face of what has happened.

Professional skaters can feel unsafe on the ice if they do not have their own personalised gear.

Carrillo became the first Mexican figure skater in history to qualify for an Olympic Winter Games free skate in men’s singles and performed at Beijing 2022 last month.
